Civil Servants Vs MoU Translation: Misinterpretation Can Be Critical!

As a civil servant, I often get tasks that seem simple: comparing documents that have been translated from Indonesian to English. Usually, these are important documents, such as Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), which will later be used for international purposes.

When "Mandatory" Becomes "Encouraged"

One example I encountered while reviewing an MoU was this sentence:

✅ Indonesian: “Peserta wajib mengikuti seluruh pelatihan.”
✅ English: “Participants are encouraged to attend the entire training.”

See the difference? In the Indonesian version, "wajib" means participants MUST attend. But in the English version, "encouraged" sounds more lenient. If left as is, international participants might assume the training is optional when it is actually mandatory.

Manual Checking? It Takes Forever!

Checking for differences like this manually, word by word, can take a long time. But now, I use ChatGPT to assist.

How to Quickly Compare MoUs Using ChatGPT

I simply copy the text from both versions of the MoU into ChatGPT and type a simple command:

“Compare this text with its English version and highlight key differences.”

The result? In seconds, ChatGPT highlights words with different meanings!

ASN Must Be Careful! Misinterpretation Can Have Big Consequences

In civil service work, small translation mistakes can have major impacts. MoUs are not just documents; they are the foundation of international collaboration. If parts of the translation are inaccurate, implementation may differ from the original intent.

With ChatGPT, I can:

  • Identify differences between Indonesian and English texts within seconds.
  • Ensure consistent translation across the document.
  • Avoid misinterpretations that could affect international policies.

Conclusion: Technology Makes Civil Servants More Efficient

Previously, reviewing MoUs could take hours. Now, with ChatGPT, the process is faster and more accurate. Technology is not here to replace civil servants, but to make their work more efficient.
